Traveling from Phuket to nearby islands like Phi Phi Island, Ko Hong, Ko Lao, Ko Pahkbia, and James Bond Island offers a glimpse into the local lifestyle and stunning natural beauty. My few days in Phuket were a mix of adventure, relaxation, and unexpected challenges that taught me valuable lessons about patience and vigilance. This post shares my experience traveling from Phuket to Railey Beach and Krabi, highlighting the surprises that come with tides, transportation delays, and local encounters.

Phuket Old Town Arrival and First Impressions in Phuket
After a long 12-hour bus ride covering approximately 900 kilometers from Bangkok, I arrived at Phuket’s central bus station. The plan was clear: find transportation to my hotel and then explore the nearby islands. The map app on my phone showed the routes and timings, but reality soon proved different. A significant delay in transportation made me realize that travel here requires flexibility and awareness.
Local troublemakers often target solo travelers, looking for opportunities to scam or rob. Staying calm and alert helped me avoid trouble. A kind local stayed with me until I boarded the correct transport, reminding me that kindness exists even in unfamiliar places.
Once at the hotel, I checked in, refreshed myself with a swim in the pool, and celebrated the end of a long journey. Exploring Phuket’s Old Town and spending quiet moments by the pool journaling gave me a good taste of the island’s charm.
The Challenge of Tides and Ferry Travel
The next leg of the trip was a ferry ride to Railey Beach. This part of the journey was more complicated than expected. The ferry schedule was affected by the tides—both high and low—causing delays and confusion. Missing my debarkation point added a few extra hours to the trip and some stress.
Instead of panicking, I stayed calm and looked for alternative options. This mindset turned the situation into a unique experience. I ended up seeing places others missed and even got a private driver to take me back to my original destination. These moments felt like serendipities—unexpected gifts from the journey.

Exploring Railey Beach and Surroundings
Railey Beach is famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs and clear waters. Despite the travel hiccups, arriving there felt rewarding. The beach offers opportunities for rock climbing, kayaking, and relaxing by the sea. The nearby islands like Phi Phi and Ko Hong are easily accessible by boat, making Railey a great base for island hopping.
The local vibe is laid-back, with small shops and eateries serving fresh seafood. Spending time here after the hectic travel was a perfect way to recharge.
Final Destination: Krabi
From Railey Beach, I continued to Krabi, a town known for its natural beauty and vibrant markets. The journey was smoother this time, and I appreciated the contrast between the busy town and the peaceful beaches.
Krabi offers a mix of cultural experiences and outdoor activities. Visiting temples, exploring caves, or simply enjoying the local cuisine adds depth to the trip.
